The David Gilmour Guitar Collection, Christie’s New York, 20 June 2019

2019 is already promising to be an exciting year for the Pop Culture & Entertainment market. The first large sale announced with great fanfare is The David Gilmour Guitar Collection to be auctioned for charity at Christie’s in New York on 20 June. The entire 120 lot auction went on view at Christie’s in London during the last week of March in a strikingly impressive display.

The auction includes Pink Floyd’s guitarist, singer and songwriter’s treasured Fender Stratocasters, Gretschs, Martins and Gibsons.  Christie’s describe it as the ‘largest and most comprehensive sale of guitars ever offered at auction’, so it will be fascinating to see how it compares to the two Eric Clapton Guitar auctions previously held by Christie’s in 1999 [sale total $5,072,350] and 2004 [sale total $7,438,624], which Wallace & Hodgson were instrumental in organising in their former working lives with Christie’s.

The 1969 Black Fender Stratocaster used by Gilmour as his primary performance and recording guitar and key to the development of the Pink Floyd sound, estimate: $100,000–$150,000, on view at Christie’s London, March 2019
The circa 1954 White Fender Stratocaster, Serial No. 0001, purchased by Gilmour in 1978 and used by him on several Pink Floyd recordings including Another Brick in the Wall (Parts 2 and 3), estimate: $100,000–$150,000, on view at Christie’s London, March 2019

A 1967 Vox Electric Guitar Organ V251, acquired by Gilmour in 1978 for home and studio use, estimate: $1,500–2,400, on view at Christie’s London, March 2019
A 1955 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top, purchased by Gilmour in 1978 and used by him for numerous performances and recordings including the famous guitar solo on Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2), estimate: $30,000–50,000, on view at Christie’s London, March 2019
